OUR 2026 PRIMA MATERIA AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR 

​Angelica Esquivel (she/her) is a Xicana writer and artist from Fostoria, Ohio. Her work has appeared in Poet Lore, Barrelhouse, and Beloit Poetry Journal. She received the 2021 Zocalo Poetry Prize, the 2022 Roadrunner Review Cover Art Prize, and is the inaugural 2025 Writer in Residence of Ypsilanti, Michigan.  She lives in Chicago. 

In her debut chapbook, A Casual Apocalypse in Acapulco, Esquivel maps the apocalypse as a recurring condition and asks what survives each time the world ends again, uncovering concealed stories while celebrating beadwork and lotería, grandmothers' gardens and loves made inevitable by history. We are everything we have ever been—and, lucky for us, there is still room to dream.

OUR 2026 FEATURED COVER ARTIST

​Desert swallowtail transplant, Rachel Blair, is a visual, textual, and sonic artist. A saturated seepage of shapeshifters inhabit her textured atmospheres, licking the wounds of what is inherited, what is distorted—through metamorphosis and encounters with the demonic. Rachel’s illustrations appeared in All Ears Magazine and Rancho Linda Vista’s Wilson Barn Gallery, and her writing won the PSU 2025 Mary Folkestad Scholarship and the U of A’s Tucson Festival of Books 2017 Fiction Contest. Rachel flits between the Sonoran Desert and the Pacific Northwest, teaching at Clark College and dreaming of worlds free from systemic violence.
